Should the Automotive Industry get a bailout?

November 21, 2008 By: The Good Doctor Category: economics

I’m a Ford kid. I graduated from the high school I did because of Ford money. Graduated from undergrad out of Michigan because of Ford money. Went to grad school, got married to the woman i did, and had the children i did, indirectly because of Ford money.

But at the same time I find it more than ironic that the free marketers who railed against universal health care are now flying (in separate planes no less) to DC to ask for help.

Marc Steiner is one of the best talkshow hosts in the business. He had me on a couple of days ago to kick this idea around. Take a listen.

  • I agree with darkstar...they would definitely be better off to ride things out without it.

Should the auto industry get a LOAN? Yes. I grew up on the phrase, "As GM goes, so goes the nation." I also remember when the GNP (gross national product) was included in the newscast once a month. America is going down without the loan to the American Auto industry, because at that point, we will be owned by foreigners. We are already in debt to CHINA of all places to the tune of $1,000,000,000,000. and counting. The auto industry is being hijacked by health insurers, just like the pentagon was hijacked by the people who make hammers. Remember the $600. hammer?! Remember when Bill Clinton got in office and Hilary, at Bill's request, came up with a plan for universal health care, but because she was a woman, she was shot down? If health care costs were lower, the auto industry wouldn't be in quite a pickle. And, speaking of benefits, how many of you after hearing your salaries, inquire next about your bennies? If it weren't for the UAW, you wouldn't be working 40 hours a week with benefits. You salaried workers may work more than 40 hours, but that's by choice. Overtime? Again, UAW. How many of you would work in a building with no air conditioning, sometimes reaching 110 degrees? How many of you are creating positive carbon footprints; driving foreign cars to impress, (adult peer pressure)? How many of you realize we have been HAD, by Bush's cronies-gas is now down to two dollars a gallon, which, evidently could have been at that price the entire time!!!!! If the auto company does not get the loan, talk about trickle down, it will affect you and you and you. . .
  • If the chicomms don't buy it, it's clearly not worth having....,

First its not a bailout ,there talking about a bridge loan.As you stated Doc there must be a restructure of the business model, not only for big three; but America business practice in general, what are the priority?Baby boomers entering retirement age, escalating health cost draining resources. We need a new deal;excellent show.
  • No. They will be better off in the long term if they don't get it.
  • Only if China elects to buy them and gets no pre-emptive blocking from the feds. The market has a definite solution for the inefficiencies of operations management in Detroit.
