In the same vein, JFK privately expressed concerns about the potential for a military coup if he pushed too far for negotiated settlements with Moscow. I think I read this in Randall Woods' biography of LBJ or David Halberstm's The Best and the Brightest. The first volume of the late Arthur Schlesinger Jr's biography of FDR notes that a young Major Dwight Eisenhower assisted General Douglas MacArthur in crushing a protest staged by World War I veterans in Washington DC.
