		<description>I do think that historical literature is thought to have more gravitas.  And I think that there is an assumption that the purpose of African American literature is to correct the historical record.  I haven&#039;t gone through the prize winners, but I do know that some of the mose celebrated white male writers choose very contemporary subjects.  I am thinking Rith, Updike, those cats.  Don&#039;t know what that MEANS exactly, but it&#039;s worth throwing it out there.</description>

I think you&#039;re definitely right about &quot;disposable culture,&quot; that that is the biggest factor, but I think the librarian has a point as well. When I get the time, I&#039;m going to go through those other white prize winners.  We&#039;ll see.
