And I think that there is an assumption that the purpose of African American literature is to correct the historical record. I haven't gone through the prize winners, but I do know that some of the mose celebrated white male writers choose very contemporary subjects. I am thinking Rith, Updike, those cats. Don't know what that MEANS exactly, but it's worth throwing it out there. I do think that historical literature is thought to have more gravitas.
